Prime Minister Fillon attends mosque opening French Prime Minister Francois Fillon is expected on Monday to open a huge new mosque in the Paris suburb of Argenteuil, home to some 28,000 Muslims. It is the first time in the history of the French 5th Republic (since 1958) that a prime pinister of this rigidly secular state has attended such an inauguration. The Al-Ihsan mosque, built on the site of a disused Renault factory, was bought by an Algerian businessman 20 years ago. Its imams will be appointed by Algiers. The building can hold up to 2,500 worshippers and includes a Koranic school. On Sunday, via the social networking site Twitter, the former Alaska governor asked "peace-seeking" Muslims to understand that the mosque will interfere with recovery from the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Earlier Sunday afternoon, Palin tweeted, "Ground Zero Mosque supporters: doesn't it stab you in the heart, as it does ours throughout the heartland? Peaceful Muslims, pls refudiate." Currently, there are plans to build a $100 million 13-story mosque and Muslim community center two blocks from Ground Zero in New York City. It has already received some of its building permissions. The center would include a swimming pool, auditorium, exhibit space and a worship area. In June, thousands protested the proposed projects. Two art curators, Yuri Samodurov and Andrei Yerofeyev, were convicted Monday by a Moscow court of "inciting religious hatred' for putting on an exhibet called "Forbidden Art" in 2007. A Mickey Mouse Jesus, a Coca Cola Christ with the slogan "this is my blood" and a Christ on the cross with an Order of Lenin medal in place of a head, were among the offending items. The two curators escaped jail sentences but were ordered to pay fines of of 200,000 roubles ($6,477) and 150,000 roubles ($4,858) respectively. They could have faced a maximum 3 year sentence.

PRISTINA – Reports from Kosovo say some 5,000 people protested today in the capital, Pristina, against a government decision last month to ban Muslim head scarves in public schools. Angry protesters with banners that read "Don't use our state against us" and "Communists out" urged the authorities to reverse the recent suspension of several girls from school for wearing head scarves. The former Serbian province declared independence in 2008, adopting a secular constitution. About 90 percent of its population is Muslim.

The country is split roughly between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism, though some 400,000 Muslims form the largest non-Christian minority. A 2008 law requires that immigrant clerics receive integration training, including language instruction, before practicing. Religion classes are mandatory in some schools, although waivers are regularly granted upon request.

France - An Israeli resident who made a fortune in the European real estate business has decided to pay for the construction of a mosque in France for the benefit of the local Muslim community. Father of four Robert Harush, 58, grew up in Ashkelon and having completed his military service tried his luck in the real estate business in Europe. His success has won him many hotels and buildings and he is estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of shekels. Despite his success Harush did not forget his hometown and has returned to Ashkelon and invested in local building ventures.
